Additive rheology of complex granular flows ArchiMer
Trung Vo, Thanh; Nezamabadi, Saeid; Mutabaruka, Patrick; Delenne, Jean-yves; Radjai, Farhang.
Granular flows are omnipresent in nature and industrial processes, but their rheological properties such as apparent friction and packing fraction are still elusive when inertial, cohesive and viscous interactions occur between particles in addition to frictional and elastic forces. Here we report on extensive particle dynamics simulations of such complex flows for a model granular system composed of perfectly rigid particles. We show that, when the apparent friction and packing fraction are normalized by their cohesion-dependent quasistatic values, they are governed by a single dimensionless number that, by virtue of stress additivity, accounts for all interactions. We also find that this dimensionless parameter, as a generalized inertial number,...

Impact of temperature inversions on SST evolution in the South-Eastern Arabian Sea during the pre-summer monsoon season ArchiMer
Durand, F; Shetye, Sr; Vialard, Jerome; Shankar, D; Shenoi, Ssc; Ethe, C; Madec, G.
Temperature inversions are known to occur in the near-surface ocean regime where salinity stratification is large enough to influence the density field. However, they have not been known as features that alter near-surface processes significantly to influence the sea surface temperature (SST). From the analysis of new observed datasets as well as of state-of-the-art numerical model outputs, this paper shows that heat trapped within a temperature inversion makes significant contribution to warming of the SST in the South-Eastern Arabian Sea during the pre-southwest monsoon season.

Toward a European Coastal Observing Network to Provide Better Answers to Science and to Societal Challenges; The JERICO Research Infrastructure ArchiMer
Farcy, Patrick; Durand, Dominique; Charria, Guillaume; Painting, Suzanne J.; Tamminem, Timo; Collingridge, Kate; Grémare, Antoine J.; Delauney, Laurent; Puillat, Ingrid.
The coastal area is the most productive and dynamic environment of the world ocean, offering significant resources and services for mankind. As exemplified by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, it has a tremendous potential for innovation and growth in blue economy sectors. Due to the inherent complexity of the natural system, the answers to many scientific and societal questions are unknown, and the impacts of the cumulative stresses imposed by anthropogenic pressures (such as pollution) and climate change are difficult to assess and forecast. A major challenge for the scientific community making observations of the coastal marine environment is to integrate observations of Essential Ocean Variables for physical, biogeochemical, and biological...
